School History

The first school in Water Valley area was started by a group of men and women with school age children, calling themselves the "Eagle Hunt Club." They each pledged as much as they could pay toward hiring a teacher. They then selected a site on the North Concho River close to Yandel which was about 4 mi. from present day Water Valley.

Mr. James Westfall became the first teacher in 1880. Classes were held outside under the pecan trees as weather allowed. In 1881, classes were held in"picket house" with a "sod roof" belonging to Henry and S.E Schoonover.

In December 1881,Widow Havins donated some land for a school about 2 mi. down river from Yandel. Mr. Knapp built the first lumber schoolhouse on this land. No school was held while the building was under construction.

In 1888 this schoolhouse was moved two miles further down river to what would become Water Valley.

In 1894, J.L. Phelan gave land to be used as a school site for a public school building.

A large school building with a cupola was built and the other school sold.

The first building is now part of the house owned and formerly lived in by Edith Bannister, daughter of Harry Howard and Granddaughter of J.O. Hanson, and the founder of Water Valley.

At first the new schoolhouse was a one-room building but classrooms were added as the enrollment increased, serving until 1913. At this time, the common school district became Water Valley Independent School District. An $8000.00 bond issue was voted to "construct and equip a free public school building of brick". A total of nine grades were taught.

On the completion of the new building in 1914, the old school house was sold to the Water Valley Baptist church and is now part of the present church. The eleventh grade was added in 1930, discontinued in July 1932 and added again in 1933. The twelfth grade was added in the1941-42 school year.

The Simpson School District, better known as the Divide, and Powell School District consolidated with the Water Valley ISD in 1931. The present day elementary gym was built with WPA labor in 1935, costing $4,574.00. In 1938-39,10th & 11th grade students were transferred to Water Valley from Grape Creek. Carlsbad students attended their last two years at Water Valley and later on the last four years. Bus routes were changed to pick up the students. Six-man football was started in 1939-40.In 1949 Walnut Grove (Tom Green) and the Walnut District (Coke) consolidated with Water Valley. Carlsbad School district consolidated with Water Valley ISD in 1971.

The school was remodeled in 1951 and a $100,000.00 bond issue was made. When the work was not finished by the first of September, classes were held temporarily in the Santa Fe Railway Station. A lighted football field was added in 1954. Another bond issue was made in 1974. An addition was made to the school and extensive remodeling was done. 1980 marked the year for the beginning of eleven-man football.

A $2,000,000-dollar bond issue was voted in 1981 for a new high school. The building was completed in the fall of 1983. In 1986, the football field was moved to make room for a track around the field. New lights were added to make the school one of the finest in the area.

In 1993 a new wing of 4 classrooms were added to the high school as well as a new band hall and concession stand.

Returned to 6-man football in 2002.

November 2005 - A new elementary opened, high school renovations made, administration offices moved to the old elementary.

Spring of 2007 - New gymnasium was completed.
